Speaking on the shooting, Police Media Spokesperson stated that the shooting that occurred in Jaffna was not related to Vidya’s court case.

According to the Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara,

Heavy traffic had been reported on the route taken by High Court judge, M. Illanchelian on the day due to an argument erupting between a group of individuals on the road who were reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

When the police officer leading the security escort of the High Court Judge, had approached the group of individuals, a certain person had pulled out the officers gun and opened fire, after which a second police officer had jumped out of the escort car and proceeded to fire at the individual who opened fire.

Both police officers involved had sustained extensive wounds,  where one officer succumbed to his injuries yesterday (23), at the Jaffna Hospital.

The perpetrator had sustained wounds during the incident as well, and had fled the scene, has been identified.

Gunasekara concluded that the shooting was not linked to Vidya’s Court case.

The incident had reportedly occurred at around 5.30pm last Saturday (22),  near the Nallur Kovil in Jaffna while the shooter had targeted the vehicle the judge was traveling in.
